The National Trust
is non government organisation; it has been created to conserve
Australia’s indigenous, the historic and natural heritage. In
1965 the Australian Council of National Trusts (ACNT) was
formed. There are eight State and Territory National Trusts in
Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Western
Australia, Australian Capital Territory, Northern Territory, New
South Wales, and Queensland. The ACNT all together owns or
manages over 300 heritage places. Yearly there is around one
million visitors experience their properties. South Australia
has over hundred historical buildings as here on the above
picture the Ayers House on North Terrace, the Collingrove
Homestead in Angaston, and the Beaumont House. The National
Trust of South Australia manages around 28 natural reserves. The
Ayers House is one of the last nineteenth century house found
along North Terrace. The house is constructed of local blue
stone. Sir Henry Ayers lived in this house from 1855 till 1897,
during the year 1860 he made of this nine room house a grand
mansion. Henry Ayers earned his fortune from Burra Burra Copper
Mine also known as the “Monster Mine”. Henry Ayers was born in
England in May 1821. He emigrated with his wife Elizabeth in
South Australia in 1840. He was engaged in the Bura Bura mine in
1845 as secretary and very quickly he had under his control one
thousand workers. Afterwards he was the managing director of the
mine for almost 50 years. Henry Ayers died in June 1897 in
Adelaide. |
