This picture shows a statue of the Captain Matthew Flinders. It
is situated in North Terrace in Adelaide. The Captain Matthew
Flinders was a navigator and explorer of Terra Australis.
Matthew Flinders was an accomplished navigator of his age. He
has been sailing with Captain William Bligh. He was also a very
good chartmaker. Matthew Flinders was born In England in
Donington, Lincolnshire. He was very interested in exploration
since he has been reading the tale of Robinson Crusoe. When he
was 15, he joined the navy. He has been sailing on The
Providence with Captain Bligh; it was a sail boat transporting
bread fruit from Tahiti to Jamaica. Later on Captain Flinders
sailed to Australia. In a very small boat called Tom Thum, he
explored the coastline around Sydney in 1796. The word
“Australia” was used by Matthew Flinders but he was the first to
use the word. It seems that he had it from the book “A
Historical Collection of Voyages and Discoveries in the South
Pacific Ocean” from Alexander Dalrymple. At this time Australia
was called it “Terra Australis”. |
