The Torrens
River takes its source in the Adelaide Hills near Mount
Pleasant, a town located at the northern end of the Adelaide
Hills. In November 1836 the river was discovered by George
Strickland Kingston, born in Ireland and arrived in South
Australia in 1836. The name of the river was given after Colonel
Robert Torrens by the Colonel William Light. The Colonel
Torrens was a British army officer. The Colonel Light was born
in Malaya in 1786 and is the illegitimate son of the Captain
Francis Light, the Governor of Penang, and Martina Rozells. The
Torrens River flows through Birdwood and Gumeracha, a town near
Adelaide. The river continues its way through the Torrens Gorge,
it goes between the city centre and North Adelaide. In the
Adelaide Zoo there is a weir providing a lake in the park. The
Torrens River ends its way in the Gulf St. Vincent, on the
southern coast of Australia. |
