This statue has been constructed in honour of Adelaide’s founding father, the Colonel William Light. Edward Gibbon Wakefield has been involved in the colonization of South Australia in 1831. Wakefield was born on 20 March 1796 and died on 16 may 1862. He has also been involved in the colonization of New Zealand. Edward Gibbon Wakefield was the eldest son of Edward Wakefield and Susannah Crush. He was born and educated in Edinburgh, England. Wakefield in the past was a King’s Messenger; he was used to bring diplomatic mail about Europe before and after the Waterloo Battle. Wakefield married Eliza Prattle in 1816. His wife died after having given birth to their second child.
