On this
picture you can see a koala on a tree. In Australia Koala is a
protected animal. The word koala comes from Dharuk, an
Australian aboriginal language, spoken by the Dharuk people, but
it is now an extinct language. It is said that in the aboriginal
language koala means “no drink”. Although that the koala drinks
very little water, they eat enough eucalyptus leaves, it is also
their main food, these leaves has sufficient water so that they
do not need to come down their tree to drink. The koalas stay
most of the time in their tree and have no much activity. It has
been discovered that koalas have quite small brains and that 40%
of the cranial cavity is filled with liquid. The koala is quite
similar to the wombat one of its closest relative. Wombats are
also marsupials from Australia. The koala has larger ears than
the wombat and has also a thicker and softer coat. Male koalas
usually weigh up to twelve kg and female up to eight kg. In
Queensland subtropical and tropical areas the koalas are
smaller, they a little bit different. It has been found that
giant koalas have been living 50.000 years in the southern part
of Australia. |
