The monitor
lizard is a group of lizards that form part the Varanidae
family. The monitor lizard is usually known as Goannas in
Australia. The Komodo Dragon make part of the monitor lizard and
is the largest lizard in the world. Most of the monitor lizards
look mostly alike and only different in size. It has an average
length of around two to three meters. In weight the wild Komodo
Dragon may be around seventy kilos and those in captivity weigh
more. A lot of Komodo Dragon are found in various islands in
Indonesia. It seems that the monitor lizard is the most highly
developed lizard. It has also been discovered lately that
Varanidae lizards produce venom but the monitor lizard does not
use the venom as snakes. The origin of the name of monitor seems
to come from a superstition saying that they would warn about
the presence of crocodiles. There is different type of monitor
lizard as the Nile Monitor, the Timor Tree Monitor or Spotted
Tree Monitor is a small species of monitor lizard originally
from New Guinea, Indonesia and Australia, the Lace Monitor or
Lace Goanna is the second largest lizard after the Perentie,
they are usually arboreal monitors and the Short-Tailed Monitor
or Pigmy Goanna is native from South-East Asia but migrated the
last years in Indonesia and Australia. |
