Parrots are also known as Psittacines
which forms part of around 353 bird species, grouped
in two families the cockatoos and the true parrots.
Parrots are usually found in warm part of the world.
South America, Central America and Australasia have
the most number of parrots. All the parrots are
zygodactyl, they all have four toes on each foot,
two at back and two in front. The cockatoo make part
of the 21 bird species making part of the Cacatuidae
family. The name cockatoo is originally from Malay,
kakaktua, which means “older sister”. The true
parrots have about 330 bird species. A lot parrots
species are kept as pet as the parakeets,
cockatiels, macaws, conures, cockatoos, lovebirds,
amazons, african greys and budgerigars. These
parrots are very colorful. Some parrot species can
live up to 80 years. The lovebird is considered as a
very social bird, they are mostly kept in pairs,
because when they mate it is usually for life. They
have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years. The cockatiel is
a small parrot, they are very popular as pets, and
they are originally from Australia. The budgerigar
is also a small parrot, they often call it parakeet.
The budgerigar is available in different colors. The
African Grey Parrot is grey, has a medium size, this
parrots seems to be kept since over 4.000 years.
Conures can be small parrots or large parakeets and
are found in the western hemisphere. |
