The Perentie
Goanna is the largest monitor lizard originally from Australia
and it is the third largest lizard, the largest is the Komodo
Dragon. The Perentie is often found in the arid and rocky areas
of Australia, they are often found west of the Eastern
Highlands, in the past the aboriginal tribe as Kulin used to
live there. The rival of the Perentie is the Papua Monitor. The
Perentie is quite hard to find in Australia. They are fast
sprinters; they can also stand on their back legs so that they
to have a better view of the surrounding. The University of
Melbourne made research very lately on the Perentie, other
monitor lizard and iguana and discovered that they were
venomous. The prey animals of the Perentie are small mammals,
birds, reptiles, insects and carcass of dead animals. The Water
Monitor is considered to be the second largest monitor lizard.
The Water Monitor likes tropical areas, they are mostly found in
the southern part of Asia and also in Malaysia. The largest
monitor lizard, the Komodo Dragon is carnivorous, the average
length of the Komodo Dragon is usually two to three meters but
the largest has been recorded at 3.13 meters long. The largest
monitor lizard is considered as an endangered species; it seems
that there are only about six thousand living Komodo Dragon.
They are recorded in the International Union for Conservation of
Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) Red List of Threatened
Species, this union was created in 1963. |
