A monolith is a geological feature such as a mountain. It stands on its own and usually appears due to erosion. It’s a single mass of rock, usually made of hard or solid metamorphic rock. The Mount Augustus National Park in Western Australia is based on one of the largest and highest monoliths world wide. It is calculated to be about 858 metres above its surroundings, covering approximately 47.95 km2 and to be about 1105 metres above sea level. Being 8km long the monolith’s rock is said to be about one thousand million years old. An enormous figure for such a geological feature; monolith! It is also said to consist of granite rock. The latter should be of about 1650 years old. The granite rock lies beneath the monolith. For many years the Ayers rock have been said to contain the world wide biggest and largest monolith. Nevertheless this fact is wrong as if we may say; the Ayers Rocks are not monoliths as the Mount Augustus is 2.5 times its size. As already mentioned before, the Mount Augustus is the largest monolith even discovered it is found in the western parts of Australia and is, as can be seen on this picture, a world wonder. It forms part of the beauties of nature.
