On the picture above you may observe darters and pelicans along the beautiful sandy beach. Darters are also known under the name of snake birds. There is nowadays four species still alive. They are often called snake birds because of their long neck which is also thin. When they are swimming in water they really look like snakes if the body is not seen. Usually the male darters have a dark brown or black plumage and females do not have so dark plumage. Darters are birds that are mostly found in tropical or subtropical areas. Often their habitat is in rivers, lagoons, bays, estuaries and lakes. They often get in a group together which can be up to one hundred but during breeding season they like to have their own territory. The main food of the darters is fish. The four living species are Oriental Darter, Australian Darter, African Darter and Anhinga. There were extinct species which were found in Australia and Mauritius but they are only known from their fossils. The Darters are close relatives to pelicans.
