Brisbane has
been given in honour of Sir Thomas Brisbane. The name was given
by Cook. Sir Thomas Brisbane was born on twenty three July 1773.
He was and astronomer, soldier and a colonial Governor. He was
born at Largs in Scotland. In 1789 or 1793, Thomas Brisbane
joined the British Army. He has been serving under the Duke of
Wellington. Between the years 1821 to 1825 he became the
Governor of New South Wales. The Brisbane River has also been
named after Thomas Brisbane as well as the Brisbane crater which
is on the moon and Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium in Brisbane.
It was John Oxley in 1823 that discovered the Brisbane River.
Sir Thomas Brisbane went back to Scotland where he continued to
study and there he constructed an observatory on the estate of
his wife. In 1848 he received the Keith prize as he a member of
the Royal Society of Edinburgh. |
