The William
Jolly Bridge is one of the bridges that cross the Brisbane
River, it is exactly the sixth. You can observe on the picture
that it is an arch bridge. It has been opened in March 1932. It
was opened by Sir John Goodwin who was at this period the
Governor of Queensland. A.E. Harding Frew made the design of the
bridge and supervised the construction. The William Jolly Bridge
connects Grey Street to Roma Street. The purpose of the bridge
when it was constructed was to avoid that the traffic increases
on Victoria Bridge. The Bridge has been constructed with two
lanes in each direction for motor traffic and also a footpath on
each side. When the bridge was opened it was named Grey Street
Bridge, it was only in July 1955 that the bridge has been name
William Jolly in honour and in memory of William Jolly who was
the first Lord Mayor of Brisbane. |
