Namarrgon
djadjan is a set of three tall cliffs. Ubirr is a sacred place
for the aboriginal people of this region. At Nourlangie rock you
will discover a visual homage to Namarrgon, Lightning Man
presiding over his own sacrosanct area. When you visit the area,
there are plaques that tell you that these places should not be
disturbed because it can be very dangerous. On one of the
plaques you may read this “A
HEALTH WARNING. The bones of this person have been swollen by
Miyamiya, a sickness you can contract if you disturb the stones
of a sacred site downstream near the East Alligator River”. So
while visiting the place, be careful not to disturb Namarrgon,
you never know what can happen to you. The aboriginal people
have a lot of beliefs and sacred place that are not allowed to
be touched by strangers. This is the customs of the aboriginal
people, when being in the area you learn much more about their
customs and culture. |
