The Roper River is in Roper Bar which is 606 km from Darwin South, 1235 km from Alice Springs and 312 km east of Katherine. Ludwig Leichhardt was the first one to explore the Roper River in the year 1845, while making his way from Moreton Bay to Port Essigton. Ludwig Leichhardt crossed the Roper River at Roper Bar, which is an area in the Northern Territory, this place of Australia is known to be uninhabited. The river was named after John Roper who was a member of his expedition. Roper Bar has a police station and hotel/motel very basic known as the Roper Bar Store, a roadhouse and a caravan park.
