On this
picture you can see the train station of Flinders Street. The
station is found at corner Flinders and Swanston streets in
Melbourne Australia and is also next to the Yarra River. The
station has been built in 1854 and is the oldest station of
Australia. On the above picture you can see some of the next
departures of the trains. You can see the Williamstown Line, the
Altona Line and St Albans Line. Flinders Street is a very busy
railway station. Near the railway station you will see the
Federation Square which has galleries for exhibitions and a
winter garden. There are everyday around one thousand and five
trains passing by. The first railway station construction was
called City Terminus; it was officially opened in September 1854
by Sir Charles Hotham. It was the first opened in Australia. In
1882 it was decided by the government decided that a new central
passenger would be constructed in replacement of the ad-hoc
construction. In 1899 there has been a world design competition
held and it was won by J.W. Fawcett and H.P.C. Ashworth and the
work started in 1901 and lasted nine years. |
