On
this picture you can see the Harbour Bridge of Sydney
illuminated. It is great to have a walk in the city of Sydney
during the night and observe all the magnificent illuminated
buildings. Sydney has very beautiful views at night. It is a
pleasure to walk around. The Harbour Bridge of Sydney is very
famous as the Opera House or the AMP Tower. The bridge is the
main crossing of the port of Sydney. During 1967 the Harbour
Bridge was the tallest structure of Sydney. The bridge has also
been recorded in the Guinness Record Book as the widest
long-span and as the largest steel arch bridge. As from 1815 it
has been planed to construct a bridge, it was Francis Greenway
who made the proposition of building a bridge over the harbour
but the construction only started in 1890 which was designed by
John Bradfield. Francis Greenway was a famous colonial
architect. Greenway was born in Bristol in England. During 1809
he was bankrupt. In 1812 was sentenced to death for having been
found guilty having made a false financial document. Later on
the death sentence was changed to fourteen years transportation.
Then Greenway came to Sydney to execute his sentence in 1814.
Between 1816 and 1818 he designed and built the Macquarie
Lighthouse, at this time he was still a convict. Francis
Greenway was to be seen on the AU$10 note of 1966. |
