On
the above picture you can observe a post sign showing the way to
the observatory hill in Sydney Australia. The observatory of
Sydney is located on a hill in an area known as The Rocks.
Previously there was at this place a windmill which was
constructed in 1796. The wind mill was built during the
settlement of the European; it was used to grind grain into
flour for the use of the colonies in the area. During the year
1840 the fort was partly demolished. And in 1848 the architect
Mortimer Lewis designed and built a new signal station which is
now the oldest structure on the hill. Nowadays it is a working
museum; the visitors climbing to the observatory hill can
observe the stars and the planets with a modern telescope. There
is also a telescope which was constructed in 1874 and is the
oldest one in Australia and is still in use. The observatory
hill in Sydney is a popular attraction to tourist and
Australians. When being at the top of the observatory hill
visitors will have a fascinating view of the harbour bridge and
the Sydney Harbour. |
